Social Programme / Public Engagement Day (12th May)

“I International Seminar on (Neo-)Victorian Studies in Spain: VINS Network”.

10-12th May 2017

Public-engagement day (12th May)

This international seminar, just like the research network “VINS: (Neo-)Victorian Network” from which it spins off, aims at developing cultural dissemination and pass on to all audiences the interest for the Victorian era and the 19th century. Hence, the organising committee has arranged a public-engagement day on the 12th of May to complement the academic sessions and share our interest in (neo-)Victorian literature and culture with the audience. In the activity “In Conversation with Victorian Álvarez”, we will meet the author of novels such as Hojas de Dedalera (2012), Tu nombre después de la lluvia (2015) o El sabor de tus heridas (2016). In this activity Victoria Álvarez, one of the most promising authors in the Spanish literary scene, will draw us upon her work as a writer and her literary references in a promisingly stimulating literary encounter. Then, Dr. Alicia Marchant Rivera (Dpto. de Ciencias Históricas, Universidad de Málaga), will deliver the talk entitled  “La piedra y el papel, de la escritura última a la presencia victoriana en España: claves sobre la historia del Cementerio Inglés de Málaga”, in which delegates will learn about the impact of the Victorian era in the city of Málaga. The morning activities will take place at the main venue (The Green Ray-Link by UMA). This interesting talk will lead us, after a lunch-break, to a guided walking tour around the English Cemetery in Málaga and some nearby buildings around Paseo de Reding guided by Drs. Alicia Marchant Rivera and Jorge Leiva RojoThis tour, which will enable the delegate to perceive in situ the nineteenth-century past of Málaga, closes the nourished public-engagement programme of the seminar. These activities will be mainly conducted in Spanish, with the exception of the evening tours, which will be offered both in English and Spanish.

Please note that you can choose to register only for the public-engagement day (15€).
